Locals step out for gay old time at matchmaking festival with a twist Independent. All week rainbow flags have festooned the west Clare town. On Friday, coach loads of young men with extraordinary amounts of luggage arrive, as though on some exotic safari. Same-sex ceilis clatter noisily through the ballroom of the Hydro Hotel. And later that night outside one of the town’s chippers, one flat-capped old-timer is overheard telling another that “he’s looking forward to the Mr Panti show”. That would be Miss Pandora Bliss, Ireland’s reverend mother of drag, who is presiding over the year-old festival going gay and gamely slipped off her rhinestone heels for the Walls Of Limerick on Friday night. She’s not sure how her act — a sean-nos version of Madonna’s Like a Virgin has been rumoured — will go down this far from the pale. But everyone loves a big clown, she quipped, “and that’s essentially what I am”.

We contend that, notwithstanding their cultural and spatial distance, the examples of Te Aroha and Lisdoonvarna reflect ways in which the spa town was developed within a global template during the nineteenth century.
While local cultural forms shape such spaces, we maintain that they are also part of wider global cultural networks, in these cases, the British Empire. To us, it is instructive to consider the different ways in which such local-global networks operated.

Perhaps also a tendency to shyness and a puritanical attitude to sex put a dampener on courtship.

Messenger An Irish event which prides itself as the world’s first and currently only LGBT matchmaking festival has had its first success story, as a couple who met there recently married. Although it was the first time they were properly introduced to each other, the future couple actually worked in the same company for a period of time.
Then I saw on Facebook she was going to The Outing. I figured this was my chance to meet her face to face so I went down with a few friends. We are well matched so getting married this year was the right move.

This is the opening of Bonzo, one of the stories in my recent collection, Borderlines. His face looked a cross between Woody Allen and Harry Potter, but he was much plumper than Woody, and taller too. There was a reserved, almost studious air about him and no matter what the circumstances or situation, Bonzo never seemed out of place. He blended in at parish weddings and opera galas, local funerals and rugby matches.
He was a man for all capers. Nobody was sure what he did for a living, or if he did anything. He grew up in the parish, the only child of a small farmer and his wife. A gifted student, Bonzo won a scholarship to some prestigious college when he was twelve and left the village. The next time they saw him, he was a young man with a bookish look. His mother said he had a big job in Berlin, but someone else said he was working in Boston.
When his father passed away, he returned to Ireland and got a job in Dublin.

This post is going to be about matchmaking and my first ever visit to that most famous of matchmaking spa towns, Lisdoonvarna with the famous matchmaker Willie Daly. Willie has been matchmaking with the help of his year old ledger for many decades, just like his father and grandfather before him. The weather was fabulous, the sun was shining, the skies were blue, everyone was in a good mood, people were strolling around town eating icecream, there was afternoon dancing in all of the hotels with music travelling out to the streets on the sound waves.
They were there for the craic and the dancing. I met a couple who met each other in Lisdoonvarna 47 years ago and return every single year. I know someone who met his girlfriend at it two years ago too btw so it does work! It was empty and I felt a tad conspicuous but on leaving it, I met Willie heading home for a rest. I can only imagine how tiring all the talking and matchmaking must be! Dancing at Lisdoonvarna I was amused to be asked a few times if I was married. One elderly gentleman then asked if I was happily married?!
Brian and the kids had come down too, we decided to make a weekend of it and stayed in The Falls Hotel in Ennistymon. We visited the Cliffs of Moher the next day. The kids had studied it in school so they were really enthusiastic about seeing it. We then went for a walk on the Burren.
